Accutane (isotretinoin) is an oral prescription medicine intended for the treatment of severe nodular acne. Before taking it you need to sign a special agreement. In the agreement you consent to use two forms of birth control starting one month before taking Accutane (a combination of primary and secondary methods). Primary methods of birth control include an intrauterine device, male partner vasectomy, tied tubes, hormonal birth control patches or vaginal rings. Secondary forms are latex condoms (used along with spermicidal gel), a diaphragm, cervical cap or vaginal sponge with a spermicide.
The patients usually receive one month supply of this drug. To make sure this medicine is not causing dangerous side effects and is not affecting your health condition your blood will be tested regularly. Do not worry if your acne seems to get worse at first – this is the normal reaction and it means Accutane is working properly. Some side effects of this medicine are related to your vision. Avoid doing anything that requires you to see well unless you know the way this medicine affects you. Sharing Accutane with other people is not recommended as it can cause serious life-threatening side effects.
